ORIGINS

In 1798, lured by an energy, our ancestors arrived in El Salvador, and settled below a volcano amongst the magical ceiba trees.

98 is a powerful number. It symbolizes the movement of heaven and earth, both realms of existence connected by the ceiba trees that the beans grew amongst. These beans are of the highest quality, with a balanced acidity and bright taste. Intense and sweet in fragrance, the rich flavor rushes to life when emulsified in our espresso with caffeine that could wake the sleeping Santa Ana volcano herself.

One day we felt a tectonic shift of our own. The spellbinding number 98 called us. 98 was our destiny. 98 is our legacy. A number that represents things that last forever…Inspired by the estate and charged with its energy from heaven and earth We bring you Estate 98 or as the ancestors said—el Noventa y Ocho.

EL NOVENTA Y OCHO

In the late 18th century, the Larin family arrived in El Salvador from Spain, and settled at the foothills of the Santa Ana volcano, where they acquired a vast stretch of fertile land. They initially named the land Mashcarascuahuit, meaning “wooden mask” in the language of the Pipil people, a tribute to the mountain’s veiled spirit. The estate, later known as El Noventa y Ocho — The 98 — after the year of its founding in 1798. Enriched by volcanic soil, the estate flourished with cacao, tropical fruit orchards, and of course coffee.

For generations, the Larins cultivated this land with patience and vision, guided by a deep respect for nature and the conviction that coffee was more than a crop, it was a legacy. During El Salvador’s great coffee boom in the late 19th century, El Noventa y Ocho rose to prominence as one of the region’s largest and most respected estates, known for producing strictly high grown premium coffee defined by the richness of its volcanic terroir.

More than two centuries later, the spirit of El Noventa y Ocho endures as a story of land, family, and the timeless pursuit of excellence.
